Division 7 Hobie 17 Championships Regatta Recap

By: Ben Wells

Sailors showed up Saturday morning eager for a forecast of winds in the 14-20 MPH range. Eight people would compete in the H-17 fleet, along with two H-16’s and one H-14. Sailors got what they were wanting, and six races were run on Saturday. Winds varied from 14-17 MPH throughout the first four races and built closer to 20 MPH by the end of the day. Jake Larson was dominating the H-17 class after day one, and Jim Sohn held a narrow one point lead in the H-16 group. Other than the temperatures being a cool 68 degrees, it was a near perfect day for racing.

Sunday brought good winds and sunny skies, and racers got in two races in moderate winds and warmer temperatures. Jake Larson continued sailing well and held on to win the event in the H-17 fleet, followed closely by his dad, Andy, who ended up in second place. Jim Sohn lost his lead, and Christina Bradshaw stole the first place prize in the H-16 fleet. A good time was had by all, and the H-17 sailors had a perfect tune up weekend before the North American Championships in a week to follow!
